Argentine Shale Going From Dead Cow to Bullet Train, YPF Says
Oil driller is preparing its longest ever horizontal well
Vaca Muerta cost per barrel seen matching U.S. in 18 months
By Jonathan Gilbert
(Bloomberg) -- One of the largest shale formations outside of North America, Argentina’s Vaca Muerta, could soon be on track for development at bullet-train speed, according to Argentina’s state-run energy company YPF SA.
Vaca Muerta, or “Dead Cow” in English, has long been touted as the next big thing in shale. But it’s struggled to live up to expectations since the first wells were dug about five years ago as high costs, driven by unionized workers and weak transport links, have coupled with the slump in crude oil prices.
Now YPF says it has reached a point in the learning curve where development can accelerate. Some of its wells are already highly productive, and a joint venture with Malaysia’s Petroliam Nasional Bhd will progress from its pilot stage to full development in mid-2018, said Pablo Bizzotto, manager of non-conventional oil and gas in the region.
“Vaca Muerta is a train we’ve put in motion,” Bizzotti told reporters on Thursday. “And it can be a bullet train. We’re going to see the biggest growth from next year.”
Already, some of Vaca Muerta’s wells are comparable with those in the Bone Spring and Wolfcamp formations of the Permian Basin in the U.S., Bizzotto said in a wide-ranging interview at YPF’s Vaca Muerta offices. The sparcely populated 11,600 square-mile region, located in southern Argentina, is mostly made up of plains with a shale geography similar to those in Texas
Still, with just a few hundred wells Vaca Muerta remains far behind U.S. shale plays that had a years-long head-start and have drilled thousands of wells. “It’s all about building momentum, and that will take years,” Royal Dutch Shell Plc’sGlobal Upstream Director Andrew Brown told reporters in April.
Competitive With Permian
YPF, which controls roughly 40 percent of Vaca Muerta acreage, is aiming to lure the oil majors by cutting its development cost to $10 per barrel of oil by the end of 2018, compared with about double that a little more than a year ago.
“If we get there, we’ll be competitive with the Permian,” Bizzotto said.
So far this year YPF has announced pilot projects with Shell and Schlumberger Ltd., although investors shouldn’t expect many more joint ventures over the next six months, Chief Financial Officer Daniel Gonzalez said in a May 10 earnings call.
YPF has already reduced the cost of wells with horizontal sections of 1.5 kilometers to less than the $8.1 million it reported for the first quarter. Some now cost just $7.5 million, Bizzotto said.
Dropping the development cost to $10 a barrel from $13 now will be achieved in large part by a move toward longer horizontal sections.
Longer Lengths
YPF and Chevron Corp., its first partner in Vaca Muerta, are currently fracking the first wells of 2.5 kilometers. And while that length, which has about 30 fracking stages, will be the new standard, the two companies are set to experiment with even more length. They’ll begin drilling a 3.2 kilometer horizontal section and 40 stages in the second half of the year at a cost of $12 million to $15 million, Bizzotto said.
YPF says its overall oil and gas production will fall this year by about 3 percent because of protests by workers and bad weather. At the same time, though, shale output will rise with a helping hand from 60 new wells, Bizzotto said. Gross shale production from 555 wells is currently 64,500 barrels equivalent oil per day.
Faster Pace
Likewise, shale output will increase at a faster pace than the 3 percent to 5 percent a year forecast for overall oil and gas production, Bizzotto said.
Work is already under way to spur that acceleration and chip away at costs to reach the $10 per barrel goal. Apart from the longer horizontal sections, YPF is piloting geo-steering at 10 to 15 wells. The method uses 3D mapping that means engineers can continually re-direct drilling to keep within the best rock. Currently, boreholes have a predermined angle that can’t be modified.
Control rooms at the Vaca Muerta offices also allow YPF to monitor wells in real time, when only a year ago it was still using a more rustic system that saw problems go unsolved for days. The rising use of rigs that can be slid on rails from one well to another in hours, instead of days, is also boosting efficiency.
In other areas, there are talks to source the 250 metric tons of sand needed at each fracking stage from nearer than current suppliers in the provinces of Chubut and Entre Rios, Bizzotto said. Meanwhile, YPF remains in touch with the government over the construction of a train line that would slash the cost of bringing in that sand and steel pipes for wells, which are today transported by truck. There could be an announcement in the coming months, Bizzotto said.
Finally, a January accord with labor unions, which includes scrapping pay during travel and downtime, is also being implemented.
While efforts need to continue to cut costs, Bizzotto said, “Vaca Muerta is no longer a promise; it’s a reality.”
