Axiall becomes second producer to announce March hikes
- Planned US Gulf turnarounds support lower spot availability
- Spot ethylene feedstock at multi-year low
US vinyls producer Axiall will implement a 3 cents/lb price increase for all grades of PVC resin effective March 1, the company said Thursday.
"The supply/demand fundamentals support the increase with demand strengthening in domestic and export markets," Axiall said in a letter to customers. "US PVC operating rates remain constrained due to planned outages and limited VCM availability."
The company is the second major US producer to announce an increase in its March prices -- OxyVinyls was the first producer to announce a 3-cent price increase on Tuesday.
Oxy was also the first PVC producer to announce a February increase in late December. Axiall, Shintech Westlake and Formosa all closely followed suit, announcing increases of 3 cents/lb for February. OxyVinyls is expected to undergo a planned 5-6 week turnaround at its vinyls complex in Corpus Christi, Texas, in mid-March, sources said. Confirmation from the company was unavailable by time of publication.
Three other major producers are scheduled to undergo planned turnarounds during the quarter. Formosa Plastics Corporation USA is to complete a planned a turnaround in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in the upcoming week. Shintech is next in line at its Freeport, Texas, PVC plant in February or March, and then Axiall in Plaquemine, Louisiana, in late March.
Sources were skeptical of the marketwide acceptance of the February increase as ethylene feedstock prices have been near 52-month lows for most of January, hovering in the mid- to high-30s cents/lb ($770-880/mt) FD USG, and as chlor-alkali production levels have been in the high 80s% in the past two months, indicating strong feedstock chlorine production.
Trading levels were heard in the range of $690-$700/mt FAS Houston, with producer offer levels heard at $720-$730/mt, while bids were heard at $660/mt FAS-basis.
