BUNKER escribió:Ternium plans to send a significant portion of its slab production in Argentina to its facilities in Mexico, CEO Daniel Novegil said during the company's investor's day conference call last Thursday.
“We are now in the process of ramping-up the continuous caster [at its Siderar works in Argentina] and that will allow us to send high-grade slab from Argentina to Mexico, reducing the total system's dependence on slabs,” Novegil said.
The percentage of Argentina’s production to be exported to mills in Mexico is unknown, but the company said it will save an estimated $60 million annually due to reducing third-party slab purchases.
According to the Ternium CEO, the company must be cautious in slab integration, despite an opportunity to increase its in-house supply of product. However, “we (Ternium) can supply slab and that will allow us to grow in Mexico,” he said during the conference call.
The continuous caster will increase Siderar's slab-making capacity by 500,000 mt, to roughly 2.8 million mt/y. A portion of production will be used to increase finished steel output in Argentina.
